Description
Tongue. Fluorescence deconvolution micrograph of a section through healthy tongue tissue. The surface of the tongue (across top) consists of stratified squamous epithelium with a rough keratinised surface. Below this are interlacing bundles of muscles (green, bottom), between which are mucous glands. The projections on the surface of the tongue are papillae, which house the taste buds. Blood vessels are red, cell nuclei are blue and actin filaments, part of the cell's cytoskeleton, are green. Magnification: x600 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
