Description
Skeletal muscle fibres. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a skeletal, or striated, muscle fibre. It consists of a bundle of smaller fibres called myofibrils, which are crossed by transverse tubules (yellow) that mark the division of the myofibrils in to contractile units (sarcomeres). Skeletal muscle is under the conscious control of the brain. Magnification: x4000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
