Description
Cardiac muscle. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through heart tissue. This tissue is predominantly made up of cardiac muscle cells (cardiomyocytes). These cells have a high abundance of mitochondria (light areas), seen here arranged in parallel rows and columns. Mitochondria are cellular energy stores, powering the constant beating of the heart. Between the mitochondria are the orderly patterns of contractile filament proteins (grey bands) organised into sarcomeres, the basic units of muscle cell contractions. Magnification: x6000 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
