Description
Major neck muscles, illustration. The muscles labelled here are the trapezius and the sternomastoid. The trapezius extends from the occipital bone in the skull to the thoracic vertebrae in the spine, and attaches to the clavicle (collar bone) and the spine of scapula (shoulder blade). The sternomastoid (also known as the sternocleidomastoid muscle) is one of the largest neck muscles, allowing rotation of the head and flexion of the neck. It extends from the sternum in the chest, and the clavicle, to the mastoid process of the temporal bone of the skull.
