Description
Buttock muscles. Artwork of a rear (posterior) view of muscles (red) and bones of the human hips forming the buttocks. At right is the large gluteus maximus muscle, overlying the gluteus medius. At centre is the sacrum, the base of the spine. At left, the gluteus maximus has been removed from the buttock, showing the full appearance of the gluteus medius (upper left), with the gluteus minimus partially seen. Five deeper muscles form the hip's lateral rotator group (centre left, top to bottom): the piriformis, superior gemellus, obturator internus, inferior gemellus and quadratus femoris muscles. At bottom are the thigh's hamstrings (biceps femoris; semitendinosus).
