Description
Carl Alexander Neuberg (1877-1956), German-US biochemist. Neuberg pioneered the new science of biochemistry, rising to become head of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biochemistry (founded 1912). He was also the founding editor in 1906 of the journal 'Biochemische Zeitschrift' (now FEBS Journal). Research undertaken by Neuberg included the chemistry of carbohydrates, photochemistry, and fermentation. He also studied amino acids and enzymes. He aided the German war effort in the First World War, but his Jewish origin led to him leaving Germany for the USA in 1937. This photograph is from a photographic studio in New York City, USA.
