Description
Production & decay of a neutral kaon in the OPAL detector at CERN, the particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. The computer display shows the cylindrical detector in cross-section, outlined in white. An electron & positron, accelerated to high energy in CERN's LEP collider, have annihilated at the centre of OPAL. Their energy materialises in two bursts of particles (blue tracks leading to yellow & magenta blocks) and the neutral kaon. Being neutral, the kaon leaves no track, but is revealed by its characteristic V-shaped decay into a positive & negative pion (magenta tracks). The kaon is a meson and one of the 'strange' particles, containing a strange quark.
