Description
The production & decay of a negative xi particle, one of the 'strange' particles, is seen in this coloured streamer chamber photograph. A negative kaon has interacted at the foot of the photo with a proton in the gas filling the chamber; this produces (left to right) a positive pion, a negative pion, a positive kaon, & the negative xi. The xi travels only a short way before decaying into a negative pion, which veers to the right, & a lambda. The neutral lambda is invisible; it decays almost immediately to a proton & a negative pion. The blob on the proton track is an artefact. The xi is also known as the cascade particle.
