Description
False-colour bubble chamber photograph of the production & decay of a lambda particle. A negat- ive kaon (yellow) enters from below, collides with a proton in the liquid hydrogen filling the chamber, & produces a positive & negative pion (salmon pink & purple) & the lambda, which is neutral & therefore invisible. The lambda is rev- ealed when it decays into a proton (red) & a muon (pale blue). The muon soon decays into an electron (the larger of the green spirals) & an invisible neutrino. Note how the positive pion (pink) knocks out an atomic electron, which forms the tighter of the electron spirals. Tracks of particles not involved in the interaction are dark blue. The scale up the side is in units of about 9cm.
