Description
Mercury barometer, illustration. A mercury barometer consists of a glass tube closed at one end with an open mercury-filled reservoir at the base. The weight of the mercury creates a vacuum in the top of the tube. This is known as a Torricellian vacuum. The mercury column adjusts until its weight balances the force exerted on the reservoir by atmospheric pressure (blue arrows). High atmospheric pressure forces mercury higher in the column. Low atmospheric pressure allows the mercury to drop to a lower level. Standard atmospheric pressure (1 atm) is 760 millimetres of mercury.
