Description
Atmospheric pressure trick. Illustration showing a glass which has been filled with water, a card is wetted and placed on top, and the glass turned upside down with the card still in place. The unsupported card remains in place and the water does not fall out of the glass. This demonstrates how atmospheric pressure is sufficient to push the card upwards to keep the water in the glass. The downward force of the weight of the water (blue arrows) is less than the force exerted on the card by atmospheric pressure (red arrows).
