Mauna Loa Observatory. View of the main building (background) and instrument domes of the Mauna Loa atmospheric research station in Hawaii, USA. The open dome houses solar radiation instruments which measure the effects of atmospheric dust on sunlight. The observatory monitors all atmospheric constituents that may contribute to climatic change, such as greenhouse gases and aerosols, and those which cause depletion of the ozone layer. All these observations are studied and compared to measuremnts at other locations to detect global trends in the atmosphere.
