Description
Carbon dioxide analysis. Scientist uses a mass spectrometer to analyse a sample of atmospheric carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere. The mass spectromet- er ionises molecules in the gas & propels them in- to a beam which is deflected by a magnetic field. This separates the different atomic forms (iso- topes) of carbon & oxygen in the gas, because each isotope has a different charge-to-mass ratio. The relative numbers of each type of isotope reveals the source of the carbon dioxide, such as biological activity or the burning of fossil fuels. Photographed at the Global Atmospheric Sam- pling Laboratory (GASLAB) in Melbourne, Australia.
