Description
Medieval astronomy. Medieval artworks of solar eclipses (at upper right) and the Earth's sphere (at lower right) with explanatory text. The upper image shows the Sun (yellow) and Moon (partly green) in circular orbits around the Earth - this Ptolemaic system has since been replaced. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon comes between the Sun and Earth, casting a cone-shaped shadow. The lower image shows the area between the Tropics of Cancer and Caricorn as a series of white and green diagonal lines. The names of the 12 constellations of the zodiac appear on a chequered bar between the Tropics. Photographed from the 15th century book De Arte Matematicum.
