Description
Great Tom bell of Westminster. 19th-century illustration of the bell named 'Great Tom' that was originally part of the Palace of Westminster, and later used in St Paul's Cathedral. The exact history of the bell is not certain, but it was said to have been cast in the 14th century in the reign of Edward III (referred to in Latin as 'Tercius Edwardus' in the inscription). The inscription further states that the bell was 'bought from the ruins of Westminster' (the clock tower there had been demolished in 1707). The diameter of the bell at its lip is given here as 6 feet (nearly 2 metres). Artwork from 'Antiquarian Repertory' (1807).
