Description
Wright Flyer. Take-off of the world's first powered aircraft on 17 December 1903. This is the third of four flights made by the Wright brothers. This flight (along with the first) was piloted by Orville Wright, who is lying on the lower wing (centre left). This photograph was taken as a gust of wind caught the aircraft, but Orville was able to right it and continue the flight for a total of 61 metres. The aircraft was eventually destroyed by another gust of wind as it was being prepared for a fifth flight, in total it had covered 410. 6 metres. Photographed at Kill Devil Hill, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA.
