Whaleback cargo ship. Late 19th-century photochrom (photographic lithograph) of a whaleback cargo ship leaving Poe Lock, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, USA. The Poe Lock is part of the Soo Locks on St Marys River which flows between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Whaleback cargo ships, named for their distinctive shape, were steam ships used to transport cargo on the Great Lakes of Canada and the USA. This photochrom, dating from around 1899, is from the Detroit Publishing Company.
