Description
The western hemisphere of the Moon, imaged by the Galileo spacecraft at a distance of 560,000km during a gravity-assist flyby of the Earth. Toward the right (the near side) is the dark basaltic lava region Oceanus Procellarum. Just left of centre is the Orientale basin. Multispectral images from Galileo have been compared with rock samples from the Apollo missions to provide an insight into the geology of the far side of the Moon. Galileo has used flybys of Earth and Venus to help it on its way to its ultimate destination, Jupiter, where it will arrive in 1995. The spacecraft will deploy a probe into the Jovian atmosphere before entering orbit.
