Description
Venice, Italy, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). Venice lies on this island (centre) in the Laguna Veneta. A causeway (upper centre) connects it to the mainland. Venice is famous for its historic buildings and canals, and the large winding Canal Grande bisects the 4-kilometre-long island. Barrier islands, like the one at lower left, protect the city from the Adriatic Sea, but recent land subsidence and rises in sea level now threaten to flood the city. Sand banks and silt (white/green) colour the lagoon's waters. Port facilities (white) are at left of the causeway. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 21 February 2001.
