Nantucket Island. Satellite image of the island of Nantucket, located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Massachusetts, USA. North is at top. The area shown here is about 20 kilometres across. The island is formed from glacial moraine (rock left behind by melting glaciers). Deep water is a dark blue, while shallow sand banks are pale blue. The main town of Nantucket is at lower centre (grey). A long spit of land forms the sheltered waters of Nantucket Harbour (centre right). Beaches line the coastline, boat wakes are seen in Nantucket Sound (upper left), and clouds (white) are seen at lower right. Image taken by the Ikonos satellite on 7 July 2004.
