Description
USS Portsmouth in dry dock in the 1890s. This sloop-of-war was launched in 1843 and commissioned into the US Navy in 1844. It took part in a number of campaigns, including the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), the Battle of the Barrier Forts (1856) as part of the Second Opium Wars, and the US Civil War (1861-1865). It was decommissioned in 1878 and used as a training ship. It was struck from the Navy List in 1915 and sold and destroyed later that year. Here, it is dry-docked at the New York Navy Yard, in around 1898. There is copper sheathing on the hull, and an eagle and flag carving is mounted on the stern (upper centre).
