Description
Traffic pollution. Car exhaust fumes in an urban area with a pedestrian on the pavement. Depending on the type of fuel and the engine design, exhaust fumes can contain poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide, ozone, and nitrogen oxides. Particles of soot and unburnt hydrocarbons are also produced. Traffic exhaust fumes are the major air pollutant in cities. Heavy air pollution has been linked to a higher incidence of lung disease. Photographed in the West Midlands, England.
