Description
Track of the Great Comet of 1861. The comet is shown moving from lower right to centre left, receding from the Earth and getting smaller each night. The date labels range from 30 June to 9 August, with 29 observations shown in total. Star and constellation names, and drawings of constellation mythology, are also shown. This comet, one of the largest and brightest of the 19th century, was visible to the naked eye for three months in the Northern Hemisphere from June to August 1861. Comets are icy bodies from the outer solar system that boil and form a bright tail of gas and dust as they approach the Sun.
