Description
Cosmological map from an Aztex Codex. This is the first page of the Codex Fejervary-Mayer, a pre-Columbian codex from central Mexico. This page depicts the world, centred on Xiuhtecuhlti, the god of fire. The four compass points are marked by T-shaped trees, clockwise from top: east, south, west and north. In the corners are four year signs (circular). The function of such documents were to describe the sacred Aztec calendar, with 260 days making up a tonalpohualli. This codex dates from the 15th or 16th century.
