Description
Tongue anatomy. Illustration of a human mouth and the anatomy of the tongue. A sectioned tongue (upper right) shows the arrangement of muscle fibres. A square cut-out shows the lingual septum (white). There are eight tongue muscles in total. The main artwork shows the teeth, the tissue of the soft palate, the palatine tonsils, the palatine uvula, and the sublingual salivary glands (pink). Four nerve branches are also shown: vagus (blue), glossopharyngeal (pink), mandibular (green), and lingual (or sublingual, orange). Also shown is the frenulum and four types of papillae (circumvallate, foliate, fungiform and filiform). Five taste areas are shown: bitter, sour, salty, sweet and umami.
