Description
Cat tongue tissue. Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through a cat's tongue. The outer stratified epithelium (right) has spike-like (white) keratinised papillae, used by the cat to preen its fur. Below the papillae of the epithelium are striated muscles arranged in vertical, transverse and longitudinal blocks (all yellowish-orange), and scattered lingual glands. Magnification: x44 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
