Description
Tongue tissue. Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through a tongue, showing the surface (across top). Here, there are four rounded fungiform papillae, which are covered by keratinised stratified epidermis (yellow). These papillae bear taste buds. Below the papillae of the epithelium are striated muscle blocks arranged in vertical (red), transverse (deep green) and longitudinal (red) blocks. Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
