Description
Dog tongue tissue. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the tongue of a dog, showing the tongue's surface (across top). This area of the tongue shows fungiform papillae (rounded protrusions), which bear a few taste buds that are sunk into the stratified epithelium of the tongue. Below the papillae of the epithelium are striated muscle blocks arranged in vertical, transverse and longitudinal sections, as well as scattered lingual (tongue) glands. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
