Description
Titanic iceberg collision report. Daily memorandum from the US Navy Hydrographic Office in Washington DC, USA, on 15th April 1912, reporting that the British steamship Titanic had collided with an iceberg. The Titanic, the largest ocean liner ever built at the time, was reputed to be unsinkable. However, during its maiden voyage it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the night of the 14th April 1912 and sank with the loss of 1517 lives. Marked at bottom is an earlier report sent by the German steamship Amerika, via the Titanic, of a sighting of large icebergs in the area. However, this sighting was never passed to those commanding the Titanic.
