Description
Turbine testing. Technician using an oscilloscope to test turbine blades used in an aircraft engine. He is testing it with eddy currents, a non- destructive technique. Eddy currents form in any electrical conductor, such as metal, when it is placed in a changing magnetic field. The eddy currents flow around the conductor in such a way as to oppose the change in the field. If the turbine blades contain defects such as hair-line cracks, their conductivity will be affected and the induced eddy current will be less. The internal structure of the blades can therefore be monitored by measuring the size of the eddy currents with an oscilloscope.
