Description
Storming of the Bastille, 19th-century illustration. Scene illustrating an edition of 'Le quatorze juillet' (The 14th of July), a song written by French poet and songwriter Pierre-Jean de Beranger (1780-1857). Berenger was a schoolboy when he witnessed the Storming of the Bastille on that day in 1789 (a key event in the French Revolution). His song includes the line 'The next day a learned and serious old man, guided my steps on immense debris', and celebrates the civil liberties and freedoms won that day. This artwork is from an edition of his works published by Perrotin, in Paris, in 1834.
