Description
SS Californian, 1912. This British steamship was part of the rescue effort following the sinking of the RMS Titanic on 15 April 1912. It is thought that this photograph was taken from the deck of the RMS Carpathia, the ship that successfully rescued the survivors. However, controversy surrounds the role played by the SS Californian. Although the crew saw distress rockets fired, the ship's wireless was not used immediately and the Californian arrived too late to help. The subsequent inquiries proposed changes such as 24-hour radio monitoring and standard responses to distress rockets.
