Manchester ship canal, aerial view, crossed by a bridge in the foreground, with the city centre of Manchester in the background. The Manchester ship canal was opened in 1894 bringing shipping all the way to Manchester from the River Mersey at Liverpool. In 2004 it is still a seaway for 3000 ships carrying no less than 8 million tonnes of cargo.
