Description
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue, light micrograph. SCC, or epidermoid carcinoma, of the tongue is a common malignant tumour that typically affects elderly men and women. Microscopically, squamous cell carcinoma is characterized by highly atypical cells, with nuclear crowding and disorganization. This very low magnification image shows a SCC of about 7 mm in diameter with a nodular region connected to epithelium and invasive cords (accompanied by an intense inflammatory infiltrate) that invade the tongue muscle.
