Description
MODEL RELEASED. Scanning electron microscopy. Technician holds a micrograph of moss made with an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM, upper right). A sample placed in the total vacuum of a conventional scanning electron microscope must be dehydrated and coated in a fine layer of gold. With the ESEM, however, it can be studied in a partial vacuum at 100% humidity and does not need a gold coating, so it can be kept alive.
