Description
Scanning electron microscopy. Analyst with a scanning electron microscope (centre). The microscope is being used to determine the structural composition of various materials. The microscope scans a sample of each material with a beam of electrons. The beam is either scattered off the sample or causes it to emit electrons known as secondary electrons. These secondary electrons are detected and translated into a three-dimensional image of the material under analysis. Such images are seen on the screens at centre right and upper left.
