Description
Scanning electron microscopy. Untreated sample being placed into an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). If the sample was put into the total vacuum of a conventional scanning electron microscope it would have to be dehydrated and coated in a fine layer of gold. With the ESEM, however, it can be studied in a partial vacuum at 100% humidity and does not need a gold coating, so it can be kept alive.
