Description
Spanish New World atlas title page. This booklet 'Descriptio Indiae Occidentales' (Description of the West Indies, 1622) is part of a Dutch republication of a 1601 Spanish work (see C028/4362). The Dutch work ('Nieuwe werelt' or New World) was a translation of a history of the Spanish conquest of the Americas (bottom). The artworks show Mexican gods, temples and rulers. The author is named as Spanish historian Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas (1549-1626), described as a chronicler of the Indies and Spain. The coat of arms of Castile and Leon is at top centre. This Dutch edition was published in Amsterdam by Michiel Colijn.
