Description
Separation of siamese twins. Dr Eugene-Louis Doyen (left) sewing up the chest of one of the siamese twins after surgery to separate them. The female twins, named Radica and Doodica, but better known as the Hindoo twins, were born in 1888 in Orissa, India. In 1902, whilst being exhibited in Europe, Doodica developed tuberculosis. In an attempt to save Radica's life, Doyen separated the twins. Although the operation was at first considered a success, Doodica died shortly after the separation. Radica died in 1903 after contracting tuberculosis. Photographed in Paris, France, in 1902.
