Description
Royal Observatory, Greenwich. Plans, dated August 1863, of the grounds of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, London, England. This observatory, in London, England, was founded in 1675, and built on a hill in Greenwich by the River Thames. It was the first purpose-built research institution in Britain, and for centuries was the centre of astronomical and meteorological research in the UK. The original building, Flamsteed House, included the Octagon Room (upper right). The observatory later expanded to include telescope domes, and the cross-shaped Magnetic House (lower right, built 1837).
