Description
Robert Stephenson (1803-1859), British engineer and railway pioneer. Robert, the son of George Stephenson, helped his father survey the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1821. After managing mines in South America, he managed a locomotive works in Newcastle. In 1829 he built the locomotive Rocket, which won the Rainhill Trials and pulled trains on the new Liverpool and Manchester Railway. In 1833 he moved to London and designed bridges for railways. Artwork from 'Chemins de Fer, Automobiles' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
