Description
Rafah, Gaza Strip, satellite image. Rafah, which lies on the Egyptian border is the largest town in the Southern strip. It has a population of 96,000, although 44,000 of these individuals live in refugee camps in the city. The Israeli Defence Forces have repeatedly attacked the city, which is thought to be the site of arms smuggling across the Egyptian border (running from top left to bottom centre). Large swathes of buildings have been demolished; many buildings seen here near the border have since been destroyed. At top left is Tel al-Sultan, which was built to accommodate repatriated refugees after the Camp David Peace Treaty in 1978. Taken by the Ikonos satellite on 21 April 2000.
