Pyogenic abscess of the liver, light micrograph. A pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is an accumulation of pus that forms in the liver due to a bacterial infection. The micrograph show an abscess (about 1.5 cm in diameter) accompanied by swelling and inflammation in the surrounding area. The abscess is located in a cirrhotic liver. The pus was removed during processing of the sample.
