Description
Ptolemy's world map. This map of the world is from an edition of Ptolemy's 'Geographia', published in 1513 by German cartographer Martin Waldseemuller (c.1470-1520). Work on this edition started in 1505, but progress was slow and it was eight years before the maps were published. This one, which is titled 'Generale Ptholemai', shows the winds and dates from around 1505/1506. This 1513 atlas was a translation of Ptolemy's original work from Greek to Latin. Claudius Ptolemaeus, also known as Ptolemy, was an astronomer and geographer who lived in the 2nd century in the Greek culture of Roman Egypt. The text labels are in Latin.
