Description
Bubble chamber photograph revealing the hidden presence of a neutron. A stream of negative pions enter from bottom right & travel up the picture. One travels only a little way before colliding with a proton in the liquid filling the chamber. The collision produces a neutral pion & a neutron. Being neutral, these 2 particles leave no tracks. But the neutron reveals its presence when it strikes another proton to give rise to the V- shaped tracks at upper centre. The two tracks forming the left side of the V are due to protons; the right side of the V is due to a new negative pion.
