Description
Port of Luanda. Illustration of sailing ships in the port of Luanda on the Atlantic coast of what is now Angola, visited by British missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873) in 1854 during his expedition of 1852 to 1856. The following year, Livingstone reached Victoria Falls. The full name of Luanda when founded by the Portuguese in 1576 was Sao Paulo da Assuncao de Loanda. Livingstone explored many areas of southern Africa, wrote accounts of the native peoples, and campaigned against slavery. Lauded as a hero in Victorian Britain, he died in Africa. Artwork from 'The Life and Explorations of Dr Livingstone', first published in around 1870.
