Description

Igneous landscape. Landscape formed of granite, gabbro and basalt rocks with exposed rocks and cliffs. The rocks in the foreground are covered with lichen. Granite and gabbro are igneous rocks formed by the cooling of molten, underground rock (magma). Basalt rock is created by the cooling of molten rock on the surface (lava). Photograph of the Cuillin Hills on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. These hills were formed of a lateral injection of magma onto earlier sheets of basalt, the former cooling to form granite and gabbro. Later intrusions led to the terracing effect seen here and deep gullying occurred as the softer rocks were worn away.
