Overhead train power lines. Historical illustration of a pantograph system to supply electrical power to trains from overhead power lines. At left is the system used in open spaces. At right is the system used in a tunnel. The first pantograph was invented in 1879, and the use of overhead lines to supply power to trains was pioneered in the 1880s. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
