Description
North Atlantic Ocean, seafloor map. North is at top. The Americas are at left, with North Africa and Europe at right. Greenland (white) is at top. The seabed depth varies from shallow (light blue) on the continental shelves, to deep (dark blue) in the ocean basins. The main feature is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge running down the centre of the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean was formed as new seafloor created at this ridge pushed the continents apart in a process called seafloor spreading. The topography of the ocean basins has been depicted using ETOPO2-2 (Earth Topography) satellite altimetry data. The land areas use data from the Blue Marble satellite mosaic.
