Description
Meckel diverticulum, light micrograph. A Meckel diverticulum is the most common (about 2% of the population) congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract and is caused by an incomplete obliteration of the omphalomesenteric duct. It is a true diverticulum, containing all layers of the small bowel wall. It is located in the distal ileum, near to the ileocecal valve. The mucosal lining of the diverticulum may be either native ileal mucosa or heterotopic mucosa, most commonly gastric (seen at left).
